NDC Chairman and Korean People's Army

April 9 is the day when Kim Jong Il was elected in 1993 Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and April 25 is the founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army (1932).

His election as the NDC chairman served a momentum in developing the KPA into an invincible armed force.

Chairman Kim Jong Il has markedly strengthened the politico-ideological might of the KPA. Always stressing the importance of ideology, he regards that a rifle devoid of ideology is no more than a mere stick and pays a special attention to enhancing the political and ideological qualifications of servicepersons.

Whenever inspecting army units he first looks round education centres for soldiers to acquaint himself with the details of distribution and use of newspapers and books, and even attends their political studies and enjoys art performances representing their ideological and spiritual traits, speaking highly of them.

Under his command the KPA has grown up into the armed force with strong ideology and faith for which no other armies around the world can be a match.

Among them are a pilot who died a heroic death with his fighter plane in flames for the safety of the leadership of the revolution, 15 soldiers left their last words, "Long live Kim Jong Il's thriving nation!" before their death after drifting on the sea for about three months, and others devoted themselves in order to safeguard the portraits of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il and save their comrades-in-arms by covering grenades which exploded by accident.

All the KPA servicepersons are fully imbued with the spirit of defending their leader at the risk of their lives and cherish an unshakable ideology and faith to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the country and the people.

Chairman Kim Jong Il has built up the military and technical power of the KPA in every way. It is his steadfast army-building strategy to develop the KPA into the strong army perfect not only in politico-ideological aspect but in the military technique.

He has continuously taken measures to equip the KPA with unique strategies and tactics suited to the modern warfare and the country's topographical and geographical features and improve its military and technical preparedness. He has ensured that priority should be given to the development of the defence industry so as to enable it to produce by itself anything necessary for the buildup of the nation's defence capacity.

Under the slogan "Training is also a battle!" KPA officers have been qualified to skillfully undertake any military operations and combats while its soldiers, through their intense training, have prepared themselves physically and tactically so as to perform any combat tasks in time of emergency. All the services and arms of the KPA have been fully equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry with high striking power and maneuverability.

Such military and technical "superiority" as the striking power, long-range strike and electronic warfare much touted by the United States became impotent in front of the KPA's military tactics and military hardware. The KPA has now developed into an invincible force provided with a nuclear deterrent and fully prepared both for attack and defence.

The KPA has cemented its might of single-hearted unity rock-firm under the command of Chairman Kim Jong Il.

Unity between officers and men and between the army and the people is unique characteristics and traditional traits of the KPA. The traditions of the KPA, which has given full play to the traits of the said unity from the first day of its founding, are now at their zenith under the leadership of Kim Jong Il.

Always saying that soldiers are not on behalf of commanding officers but the latter is necessary on behalf of the former, he led the latter to take good care of the former with parental affection.

Today a company commander in the KPA is called the eldest brother of the company and its political instructor the eldest sister.

The commanding officers are paying deep attention to minor troubles of their soldiers, to say nothing of their health. There are many examples of KPA officers who sacrificed themselves in order to rescue their soldiers at unexpected crucial moments.

That is why the soldiers respect and follow their officers with sincerity, and regard it as their morality and conscience rather than obligation to carry out their orders and instructions at any cost without any conditions. Such a scene, where an officer and a soldier play Korean flutes together at recreation parties held during a break of their military training, can be seen usually. It can be said to be a vivid example showing the unity between the superiors and inferiors in the KPA.

Chairman Kim Jong Il formulated the traditional unity between the army and the people not merely as that of mutual assistance but as that of oneness in their ideology and working style based on the indomitable and noble spirit displayed by the KPA servicepersons, and thus saw to it that the Korean society formed a great unity between soldiers and civilians.

It is the genuine appearance of the present Korean society, in which the servicepersons and the people form a harmonious whole of taking good care of and helping each other and sharing life and death, sweets and bitters together.

Nothing on earth can conquer the might of this single-hearted unity of the DPRK.

The KPA, which has Kim Jong Il as the Chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, will as ever display its might as an invincible armed force.
