Kim Jong Un Visits Turf Institute
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- Marshal Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, looked round the Turf Institute of the Bioengineering Branch under the State Academy of Sciences newly constructed by soldiers.
Going round different places of the institute, he acquainted himself in detail with its construction and research work there.
When he reached the two-storied main building, he said he was pleased to see the green-tiled outer wall. He praised the soldier-builders for erecting the monument to the institute in an imposing manner.
After looking round the room devoted to the achievements in scientific researches, scientific information study room, e-library, genetic resource study room, biochemistry study room, laboratory, analysis room, etc, he highly praised them for successfully constructing the institute.
Noting research rooms and laboratories were built well to suit the nature of the institute, he underscored the need to take measures for providing it with necessary equipment and scientific and technological information.
He went round office rooms, dining hall, bed rooms and others to learn about the working and living conditions of its researchers and employees.
Then he toured the Scientific Research Greenhouse.
Seeing various species of turf being cultivated at the greenhouse, he said that what is essential in the research into turf is to cultivate turf which remains green all the year round, strong in resistance to cold and treading and high in ornamental effect.
He also went round an open-air experimental plot comprising the experimental field for species, experimental field for seed-selection and vegetative propagation, experimental field for turf cutting and other fields.
Learning about the growth of turf in those fields, he called for conducting research into species suited to the areas distinct in four seasons and different in their climatic conditions.
He noted that it is good to set up branches of the institute in the eastern, western and central regions.
He also examined "Sondulmil", turf of Korean species which remains green all the year round, under test-cultivation at the institute.
There is such turf with strong vitality as Songchon Turf in the country but it remains green in a short period, he said, underscoring the need for the institute to intensify the research to solve that problem.
He also underlined the need to plant trees, create grassland and cultivate flowers and other plants in all lands except the cultivated land so that there may be no land left waste or overgrown with weed.
That day he examined various type machines including those for collecting turf seeds, sowing them and cutting turf and a ground-stiffening roller machine contrived and manufactured by the Academy. He called for widely applying them.
He said he would send modern equipment for researches to the institute.
He underscored the need to turn the country into a socialist thriving nation and make it richer and more beautiful for the people by dynamically conducting the land management under a long-term plan.
He was accompanied by Choe Ryong Hae, Choe Thae Bok, Pak Thae Song and Hwang Pyong So. -0-
