Working Class of the DPRK

The working class in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea enjoys the dignity and pride as masters of the state and society.
Among them are Labour Heroes, deputies to the Supreme People’s Assembly (MPs) and singer couples of worker origin beloved of the people.

A Deputy to the Supreme People’s Assembly
U Won Yong, a Merited Coal Miner, works at the Pukchang Area Coal-mining Complex, located in the central part of the DPRK.
He felt attached to the occupation of coal miner when he heard from his mother that President Kim Il Sung had once said that he would extract coal in a pit if he were ten years younger. Afterwards, he became a coal miner and devoted his all for the increased production of coal for more than 20 years as a workteam leader and as a workshop leader.
His devotion and practical examples encouraged his fellow workers to fulfil the annual production plans earlier than others. Resolved to double the previous production results of his workshop, he introduced into production six pieces of technical innovation plans including double-cylindrical caving method and horizontal slicing method. His team handed pits for which they had created favourable working conditions with much efforts over to other teams several times and then worked in the pits which were located in deeper places and where the working conditions are bad.
Once when he discovered that the wall of the pit face began to crack by overweight, he supported the leaning prop with his body at the critical moment, thus rescuing his fellow workers and the face. Thanks to his devotion and comradely love his workshop has become a harmonious collective with the highest production efficiency.
He was honoured with the title of Labour Hero in 2012.
In the elections for Deputies to the 13th Supreme People’s Assembly held in March 2014 he was elected to the Assembly (Parliament).

Hero Weaver
Mun Kang Sun, a weaver at the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill, has overfulfilled the national economic plan by 200 per cent in average every year for over a decade.
Having started her social life at the mill, she decided to do her share in solving the problem of clothing for the people by following the examples of 16 Labour Heroes produced by the mill.
Everything was unfamiliar and challenging for the novice; she prepared a tool box and devoted her spare time to learning the principles of operation of the machines under her charge. After being relieved of her shift she would earnestly learn the methods of troubleshooting. In this course the weaving machines became a part of her body and she grew up into an all-round weaver capable of finding out the reason of their troubles only after listening to their sounds and removing the troubles on her own. She fulfilled the national economic plan ahead of schedule every year.
In 2009 she decided to take 21 weaving machines under her charge, 5 times more than her normal charge; she had to run over 40 km a day to operate the machines. By introducing a new woof-supplying device to every machine, she produced cloth 22 times larger than her production quota every day. Thus, she hit her two-year production quota in less than half a year.
She brought up over 10 green hands into innovators, leading them to fulfil their yearly plans ahead of schedule.
Chairman Kim Jong Il, during his inspection of the mill on July 30 2009, met her and had a photograph taken with her. She was awarded the title of Labour Hero in 2012 and in March 2014 elected a Deputy to the Supreme People’s Assembly.
Kim Jong Un visited her family who moved into a new house in Changjon Street in the central part of Pyongyang, in September 2012 and blessed their future.

Singer Couple
Ri Jong Son and Kim Pong Suk, singer couple, work at the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex located in the eastern part of the DPRK.
In the latter half of the 1990s, when the country was suffering difficulties, they went to work every day though they often had to do without food, and inspired the workers by singing more loudly and with a brighter smile. Their songs touched the heartstrings of the workers and aroused them to fresh innovations and feats of labour.
When he visited the complex in 2007 Kim Jong Il listened to their singing, and highly praised them.
They sang on several occasions in the theatres in provinces and in Pyongyang; they also sang at the concert held in the People’s Theatre on the occasion of May Day in 2012 in the presence of Kim Jong Un.
When an anchor asked Ri whether he felt uneasy on the stage, he answered: “Why should I? Our society is one for the workers.”
